Help Emergency Responders Find Your Residence or Business
Seconds can count in the event of an emergency, that is why your civic number must be clearly and correctly posted. Not all emergencies involve billowing smoke and raging fire, your civic number is the main feature used by emergency responders, fire, police and ambulance when locating the location of a 911 call. Without a clearly posted civic number to guide emergency responders, we may have difficulty and delays in locating the address of an emergency.
Where do I post my Civic Number?
Civic numbers should be posted in front of your home or business, at the end of your driveway, visible to traffic from both directions.
Your civic number should not be posted on your mailbox if it is located across the road from your driveway or if adjacent to your property in a group of mailboxes. Emergency responders look for odd numbers on one side of the road and even on the other.
Tips to keep in mind
Civic numbers should be displayed horizontally.
Civic numbers should be in Arabic numerals (12, not XII or not “Twelve”)
The signs should be at least 4 feet above the ground
The sign should be visible at night.
The sign should be visible to traffic from both directions.
The colour of the numbers should contrast the background. White numbers on a blue background work best. Reflective numbers are recommended.
